Project Description:

Dismantle, reconstruct and relocate historic wood framed structure. Girton Hall is a significant historic building listed on the national, state and local registers. Girton Hall is the only building to be designed specifically by Julia Morgan in 1911. Built of old-growth redwood, it features open 18-foot vaulted ceilings with wood trusses, a monumental brick fireplace and built-in benches. The building was cut into four sections to negotiate the 1.5 miles path of travel from its current site to the new site at the UC Botanical Garden. Protection of historical interior and exterior finishes required. Work included shoring, reconstruct new chimney with gas insert, sidewalks and retaining walls. New foundation, wood deck, restrooms, kitchen, air conditioning and connection to new utilities. Repair dry rot and termite damage. A new ADA-accessible main entrance was created. Replacement material features compliance with LEED materials.
